Coaches Corner

Dear LGRC Rowers and Parents,

This week marks the start of the Fall Junior Season.  Welcome back to our returning rowers and welcome to our new rowers and their families.  Many of our novice rowers participated in our Summer Learn to Row Program and thus know their way around the boathouse.  For those brand new to the boathouse, do not hesitate to ask questions or for help from any of the other rowers.

We have made some changes and added some new coaches to our staff this year and look to build a strong, fast and fun boathouse that will see success in all of our boats, from top to bottom.

While many of the names on our coaches roster are familiar ones, 3 names are new to our staff, Evan Bainbridge, Kasey Heil and Katherine Cobarrubia.   Please help me welcome them.

Evan Bainbridge comes to LGRC from Newport Aquatic Center where he served as the Assistant Varsity Men’s Coach that led the Lightweight 8+ to a National Championship in 2009, and Lead Novice Boys Coach in 2010.  As a junior, Evan rowed at LGRC and then went on to row at OCC before finishing his degree at Chapman.

Kasey Heil, also a LGRC alum, recently graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Kinesiology.  While at Washington State, Kasey rowed and coxed for the varsity womens program.  In the past few years Kasey has coached at LGRC as a part of the Summer Junior Development Camp and the Masters Program.

Katherine Cobarrubia coxed for Capital Crew in Sacramento as a junior and for UC Davis in college.  Currently she is a teacher at Presentation High School and will assist with both our Master and Junior Programs.

We look forward to another year of hard work and fast boats.

Thanks,

Jaime Velez

Boathouse Work Day & Cleanup

Thanks to all the Masters who gave up their Saturday afternoon to help finish off some of the boathouse projects!  The boathouse is looking good with the re-designed oar holders and kudos to Mick and his crew working hard on the new shelves and stands at the back of the boathouse.

Masters Competitive Sweep Program

Attention Masters
Due to the number of Masters participating in the Competitive Sweep Program we have created an attendance spreadsheet for the program.   The attendance sheet would allow the coaching staff to set the line-ups for practices in advance.   The current attendance sheet goes through September.  Click on --Masters Attendance Sheet--to edit which days you will be attending practice and which days you will be away.  For questions, changes or issues regarding the spreadsheet,  please e-mail Amy Timpe.

LGRC Needs You!
LGRC members donate many hours to help make the club a better organization. Boathouse improvement projects, outreach to disadvantaged or special needs individuals, learn-to-row programs, and club events are just a few of the activities run by volunteers.
Check out "Volunteer Opportunities" to see what you can help with. If you have any questions or project suggestions, please contact Amy Timpe.

Gold for the US Jr. Men's 8 at World Junior Championships

Congratulations to Los Gatos Rowing Club junior rower Zach Hershberger and the entire US Junior Men's 8 crew on winning GOLD in an exciting final on Sunday, August 8 at the 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.  It was a great race, with Germany (2 seconds behind at the 1500m mark) pushing hard in the last 500m in an attempt to cross the finish line ahead of the US.  The US held strong and finished .67 seconds ahead of the Germans!  Click here to see the US Rowing press release.
